Growing Female Cucumbers. Easy to do.

A well grown and harvested cucumber from a female cucumber variety.

Female Cucumber plants are easier to grow than the old fashioned greenhouse varieties of cucumber. They are called female cucumbers because the flowers of this particular cucumber are nearly always female and not the pollinating male flowers.

With the normal cucumber plants, you need to take off the male flowers regularly before they mature and start pollinating the female flowers. Once female cucumber flowers are pollinated, they turn into bitter twisted young cucumbers.

The newer female varieties rarely if ever form male flowers, however occasionally one will appear and it is an easy task to snip it off.
