Red Apples. The best Varieties for Eating and Cooking.

The Red Colouration in Apples

A bit of basic observation will let you see that sunlight plays an important role in the redness of an apple.

Look at any apple tree in late summer and you will see that the apples on the south side (sunny side) of the tree are redder than those on the other sides. The late summer and autumn sunlight in particular, are important factors in the reddening of apples.

Some apples of course don't have the essential pigmentation ingredients to turn red. But, even some of the well known green apples can have a light pink flush (blush!) with the right late summer sun levels.

Red Apple Varieties for growing in the UK.

  • Gala Apple - Sometimes known as Royal Gala -  Eat it or cook it, and it is ready from mid to late August!  Dazzling red skin, and a good firm but juicy red apple variety.
  • Pink Lady - is a good all-round apple. Eat it or cook it. It is ready from mid October, and stores well.
  • Fuji - Is another good all-rounder that comes off the tree in late October. This red apple stores well - as do most late croppers - and is good to eat straight from the tree, or after a few weeks storing.
  • Braeburn - Good old favourite red, with a bright white fleshy interior. Late cropper, and is for eating not cooking.
  • Red Delicious. I would not touch the Golden Delicious, but its red cousin is bearable! It is a good eater, and ready from middle of September.
  • Kanzi - New variety of which we know nothing!
  • Cameo - New variety of which we know nothing! But, said to be large, sweet and late fruiting. It is an American apple!
  • Rubens - New variety of which we know nothing!
  • Discovery First of the crop in late summer, but is not any good for storing. So, Eat them fresh - straight off the tree.
  • Scrumptious.  Lives up to its name. A first class red early dessert apple with flavour bordering on honey. Self fertile, for those worrying about pollinators and copes well with frost.
  • Sunrise - A good early red apple with plenty of taste. Looks great on the tree..
  • Lord Lambourne - The writer's all time favourite red apple!
  • Elstar - A good sweet fruity red apple - late - that also keeps well.
  • Blenheim Orange Can cook or eat. It has been around a long time, but is still rightfully popular. I would always have room for this red apple.
  • Rubens - Dry flavour which has been compared to bananas! Its texture is also a little on the soft side as well, but worth a try.
  • Red Windsor
  • Spartan They don't come much redder than Spartan! early early type which can/should be eaten straight off the tree. DON'T tery to store it - it doesn't like it!
  • Tydeman's Late Orange
A popular Cox-style apple, with a later season and sharper flavour.
  • Cox's Orange Pippin - We will include the Cox, because with the right late summer conditions it can turn quite a rosy red.
