Oxygenating Pond Plants.

As the name suggests, these plants are very important to supply the pond with life-supporting oxygen. However, they are equally - if not more important - for the general condition of the pond. For, as well as releasing oxygen into the water, they take out harmful gasses and minerals from the pond to create a good balance.

Without a good supply of oxygenating plants, the pond would soon go downhill and all forms of life would suffer.

Together with this, the pond would become rather unclear - and no-one wants a dirty pond! So for the purpose of this article we will call them oxygenating plants, but they do far more than simply supply oxygen - as important as it may be.

Oxygenating plants will not normally provide all of the oxygen required by your pond life - especially in hot weather. However, they will do much to provide the life-giving element within the depths of the pond.

Oxygenating plants normally spend all of their time under water, with maybe just a few leaves breaking the surface - and of course the flower stems. Because they are virtually hidden - and also because they can sometimes hide your fish! - the importance of oxygenating plants is often overlooked, or even ignored!

Oxygenating plants can be planted in containers filled with aquatic soil, but some also live their life submerged just below the surface with no obvious anchorage.
